Jade achieves pharmacy tech qualification
Well done to Jade Ketteringham from New Queen Street Surgery who has become a pharmacy technician after starting as an apprentice at the practice six years ago.
Jade said: ‘When I left school I had no idea of what I wanted to do. joined on reception and because it is close to the dispensary I became more involved in that side of things.
‘The pharmacy technician course took around two years to complete and about 20% of my workplace hours was earmarked for it which can be quite difficult in a busy environment.’
Her qualification, which she achieved at Distinction level, means that she has a lot of contact with patients talking about their medication needs and analysing data they submit, such as blood pressure readings and she works closely with colleagues in the prescription office:
‘We deal with medication requests and queries, I process what I can and then forward on to the pharmacist or GP for action if I can't. I also ensure patients’ medication monitoring and reviews are up to date. The course was very involved which was great as I love to learn. I had to understand the different medications, their side effects and how they interact with each other.
‘At NQS we do have a large pharmacy team and I am sure there are going to be lots of opportunities, so I am keen to take the next steps in my career. I have recently enrolled on a Mental Health course with CPPE and I hope to start a diabetes diploma later in the year. These courses will be enable me to perform more specific reviews. I do love my job, particularly the contact that I have with our patients and the variety. It is great developing a rapport and helping them wherever possible.’
