Pharmacist Nik trains for London Marathon 2027

Clinical pharmacist Nikunj Patel is running the London Marathon to raise money for Brain Research UK. He is supporting the charity as his father has severe dementia so he wants to help fund research and raise awareness for neurological conditions.
Nik, who works across South Peterborough Primary Care Network, including Yaxley and New Queen Street surgeries, said: ‘The London Marathon has been on my bucket list and with all my family is going through it gave me the motivation to do this. We are not going to be able to change anything for my father, but we have got to do our bit. Every little step and small things help.’
Nik has been running for about ten years and has completed marathons, most recently in Brighton last year. He is realistic about the challenge: ‘For me The London Marathon isn’t one for a personal best time as it is busy. My aim is to promote Brain Research UK and soak in the atmosphere and experience.’ Nik focuses on training steadily and gradually increasing the distance covered in training. His main goal is avoiding injury, being fit for the big day and raising funds for a very worthwhile charity.
‘My 93-year-old father, Valjibhai, has severe dementia, a devastating illness that has had a profound impact on our entire family. He now requires support with all aspects of daily living and is almost bed bound. Despite the challenges, he is lovingly cared for full-time by my 82-year-old mother, with support from me and my two sisters and the wider family.
‘While research may not be able to change my father's journey, it has the potential to make a difference for future generations. Dementia and other neurological conditions affect millions of people and their families, and research could be the key to improving our understanding of these diseases, developing better treatments, and ultimately giving healthcare professionals the tools to help patients live better lives.
Nik is already 80% of the way towards his fundraising target. ‘I have pledged to raise £2,500 for Brain Research UK. My current running total is the result of kind and generous donations from my family, friends and work colleagues. I have been humbled by their response. If anyone wants to donate, big or small, then I am happy. I just want to make people aware of the great work carried out by Brain Research UK.
Taking part in next year’s London marathon will be memorable as, for the first time ever it will be a two-day event. I am running on the Saturday so thanks to my family, friends and colleagues for all their support. It means a lot, to me and to my charity.’
